Developing the Happy Habit

How many times have you heard someone say "I'll be happy when.....", in fact how many times have you thought or said those words yourself. It doesn't matter what the remaining words of the sentence are - it's the belief that you'll be happy when you.. find a new partner, have a family, get paid more money, buy a new house. You just know you'll be happy when...

We all do it or have done it, and how much of our lives have we wasted by placing provisos on when we'll be happy? Happiness needs to be in the here and now. I believe it's the way we look at things today, it's an attitude, it's having a purpose - it's about creating the happiness habit.

I wrote on a friends post this week that we are the masters of our own destiny. No-one else is responsible for making our happiness. Other people can certainly make us unhappy but the reality is how we choose to deal with that. We have the power to change how we look at things and if someone is making us unhappy, then only we have the power to fix that.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Life is too short to be doing something that makes us miserable or putting up with someone or something that makes us unhappy. Choose your attitude, find a way for it to work or make the decision and walk away from the situation - be it job, relationship, friend, family member.

  1. Oh, so true. This is something I fight with all the time. When I was so sick I said I would just be happy if I could teach. Lo and behold I am teaching. I didn't take long to start saying, "I appreciate this, but....." I do remind myself that I am where I said I would be happy.

I am happy, though, so I think that part is covered. It's human nature to always want more. In some ways I think that is okay. That is what drives us to further success sometimes.
